T5 Heathrow, Air Intake Towers
Permanent Access System
Client: Watson Steel/BAA Date: March 2008
Alternative Access Logistics was consulted to provide a means of access to the air intake towers at T5 Heathrow.Difficult access combined with large payloads required a different approach by Alternative Access Logistics - a powered telescopic lifting beam.
AAL installed a powered telescopic lifting beam that was fixed across the diameter of the towers. Running on this telescopic lifting beam would be a powered lifting hoist. The hoist had a powered traverse along the length of the lifting beam.
A total lifting payload of 2000kg was provided with a range of movement within the tower envelope.
As part of the system a suspended control pendant with key lock was located adjacent to the tower door opening. An electrical interlock on the doors will prevent the lifting equipment from being operated unless the doors are open.
The suspended control pendant allows the operatives to move away from the door opening as the load is traversed through it.
