Terminal 5 Lift Towers, Heathrow
Permanent Access System
Client: Watson Steel/BAA Date March 2008
Following on from the success of the T5 main ternminal roof rig internal access system, Alternative Access Logistics were approached to provide an access solution for the MSCP Lift Towers.
A total of 8 separate access systems were provided to the 8 towers suspended from permanent aluminium tracks overhead.
Electrically driven trolleys on each of the 8 systems were provided for movement around each tower. From the trolley system overhead a one man cradle would be suspended thereby enabling the cradle to traverse around the three sides of the Lift Towers.
The same cradle could be used on each of the towers. In practice the cradle is to be shared between two of the towers, stored on the roof when not un use.
The tailored design of the supporting brackets, tracks and cradle needed to meet the Design Team’s exacting standards in order to complement the building aesthetics.
