Terminal 5, Heathrow, London

Modular soffit and external access system

The main facades of T5, Heathrow are huge expanses of glass, punctuated by bridges, links and brise soleil. The East and West facades are also inclined and have large vertical gutters. All facades required access for inspection and maintenance...

Alternative Access Logistics Ltd responded to the project brief by creating a solution with a unique safety restraint system that underwent extensive testing. The result was a complete specialist engineered solution that complements the aesthetic of a world class international terminal.

A specialist two-man, twin hoist cradle and Cable Restraint System were designed to provide access to the external façade.

All parts of the system were designed in accordance with BS EN 1808 and normative references. The cradles were designed as a modular system from the outset and can be assembled in various configurations dependant on the area to be accessed.

Thus the cradles can be conveniently stored in a compact form inside the terminal building. To traverse the corners of the building two 1M hoist modules are bolted together to enable maximum maneuverability. The cradle when fully assembled has a full length of 13M and consists of: 2 x 1M modules at each end, 2 x 1M Hoist module, 3 x 3M modules. The cradles are also provided with two end handrail sections to be attached to the various configurations when assembled for complete safety.
