Terminal 5, Heathrow, London
Bespoke Permanent Roof Access System
Terminal 5 represents one of the most ambitious construction projects ever attempted. The main terminal building is over 400m long and 44m in height. Complete facade access to the interior and exterior envelope was a requirement of the architectural brief...
Alternative Access Logistics were involved with the T5 Design Team in the initial concept and planning stages to provide a complete and comprehensive facade access system to the complete terminal building without the least compromise to safety and the building aesthetics.
The permanent mobile access gantries required a payload of two personnel and associated maintenance equipment. A purpose built access solution was designed, extensively tested and installed. The system comprised of a total of 31 individual gantries suspended from lightweight aluminium space frames with full PLC motion control systems mounted on 9km of Koltek aluminium track in the roof bays.
When not in use the gantries retract out of site into the wingtips of the building roof. The PLC control system also facilitated the requirements for airport security and tracking within the building.
